The part of the ships company who work in the main machinery spaces have been called "stokers" since the first lump of coal was loaded on board the first steam driven ship.The term comes from the old days when boilers would be "stoked up". The modern version of this job is called the marine engineer, but the old name still sticks and once you become a stoker, you are one for life. It is the most misunderstood but vital job on board any seagoing vessel and this poem get as close as I've seen to telling it like it was.
